Emma Surtees

My writing is rooted in personal revolution. I started writing poems when I was 10 years old to try and make sense of me childhood collections… of experiences that activated curiosity, grief, frustration and wanting to be heard in new ways. The first poem I ever wrote was about loss. About me Granda and the hole that opened up in me when he died. Since then I’ve written hundreds of poems; 99.9% that haven’t experienced the sacred event of ‘sharing with others’.

I’m a mature first year student of English Literature and Creative Writing at Northumbria University.

This page on Mark’s site offers me a safe yet vulnerable arena to share my newest poems and short prose works as they crop up out of my little corner of Bensham, Gateshead. A space to let my dialect and history radge out however it presents. Below are some authentic snippets of my poetic figuring. Drafts and tries. Work I am playing with.

If you fancy sharing your thinks and poems and ideas back at me, my email is emmasurtees@yahoo.com.
I am open to criticism and conversation. I am open to anything. Feed me Seymour.
